Liposuction is a body contouring surgery which aims to remove fatty deposits from areas of the body such as the upper thighs or abdomen. The surgery had become one of the most commonly performed surgeries. Liposuction was invented in 1974 by Dr Giorgio Fisher a gynaecologist from Italy. It has developed over time into a state of the art cosmetic procedure. Liposuction now has a number of sister surgeries available such as Tumescent and accusculpt. Although liposuction is fairly new, surgeons have attempted to remove fat cells in a number of different ways. Today technologies involve treatments such as liposculpture, which is a little more time consuming than liposuction with a greater requirement for skill. This procedure creates a much smoother end result, changing the contours of the body or face.
The procedure involves inserting a small tube like syringe through the skin. The fat is then drawn up through the tube using a suction technique leaving a much smoother surface. The procedure is carried out under general anaesthetic.
The surgery aims to beat stubborn areas of fat which are resistant to diet or exercise. Alternative methods such as the tumescent technique have no need for general anaesthetic. This method sucks fat tissue with thin cannulas. In addition to this power assisted liposuction, laser assisted and water assisted liposuction is also available.
Body shaping via surgery is becoming extremely popular and with such a growing range of methods available you are spoilt for choice. It is however important that more natural techniques are also considered.
